Important Death Certificate Notice: Effective July 1, 2026, Massachusetts law restricts access to a decedent's Social Security number on death records. Certified copies issued by cities and towns may not include the SSN unless the requester meets the requirements for access. Funeral directors listed on the death record are among those eligible to receive a copy containing the SSN. Individual municipalities may have different requirements for providing an unredacted copy. Please check with the city or town when requesting certified copies that include the SSN. RVRS Legitimate Need for SSN Guide
